GERMANY STOPS VISA APPEAL PROCEDURE GLOBALLY, UPDATES LONG-TERM ENTRY LAWS

Germany will formally ban its global visa appeal technique, the remonstration process, on July 1, 2025.

This modification implies that international citizens, including Nigerians who are refused a visa, can no longer file an official appeal requesting the embassy to reconsider the judgment.

The Federal Foreign Officer of Germany revealed this in an official update on its webpage, which also highlighted many explanations and new access processes for non-EU nationals looking to settle, get employed, or study in the nation for more than 90 days.

“The Federal Foreign Officer has decided to ban the international appeal processes against visa refusal as of 1st July, 2025. This eliminates a lawful remedy in the visa procedure that was not given by law but was formerly awarded willingly.

“Appropriate legal coverage will continue to be assured, as the ban on the remonstration process will not lessen the legal procedure given by law,” they declared.

Rather, candidates will be notified of the motives for refusal and provided with two choices: to file a legal challenge in court or present a new visa request with updated documentation.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE EXPLAINED FOR LONG-TERM STAYS

The German authority also explained that citizens from nations outside the EU, EEA, and Switzerland are required to get a visa before they go to Germany for any visit exceeding 90 days or for jobs.

Hence, nationals of Australia, Japan, Canada, South Korea, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the US are permitted to enter visa-free and apply for a residence permit after landing.

“Nationals of Australia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Israel, Canada, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and the United States of America can also get the needed residence permit after entering the nation.

“The following applies to all other nationals: a visa for a long-term visit is required to be commonly applied for at the accountable international diplomatic mission before entering the nation,” they declared.

Candidates outside the EEA, EU, and Switzerland not stated on this list are required to observe the traditional visa pathway and present their requests via the German embassy or consulate in their nation of residence.

THREE-MONTH WAIT FOR SOME VISAS

The processing period for specific visa classifications that need authorization from immigration authorities, such as study, self-employment, and family reunification, could take three months or more.

“Authorization from the accountable immigration administration in Germany is commonly needed. The immigration authority of the place where the international citizen will take up residence is accountable.

“If the authorization of the immigration authority is needed for the visa procedure, the process can take up to three months, or longer, as other authorities like the Federal Employment Agency are usually engaged in addition to the immigration authority. The diplomatic mission may only provide the demanded visa whenever the authorization of the immigration authority has been acquired,” they declared.

Hence, job-related visas are often processed faster because they automatically do not need external authorizations.

Note: Holders of a national D visa for Germany can travel within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in a 180-day duration, allowing them to travel to other European nations without additional visas.
